Teaching Context

Dear readers, this repository of online learning activities has been designed for fifth graders of a private bilingual institution located in Bogotá, Colombia. As many authors suggest (Obringer, 2001; Graetz, 2006; & Milne, 2006) a new learning environment should be thought to address specific needs of a particular group. The “audience” keeps a significant role since who they are, how they learn, and what they need will determine the nature of the learning activity. In addition, the teacher also needs to keep updated with new trends that might benefit the learners.

Learners' Bio-data
The majority of these fifth graders are between 10 and 12 years, they are entering middle school thus they have many expectations; for instance, making decisions regarding how to learn, having engaging classes, working in groups, and learning through games. The group is a mixture of visual, verbal, and kinesthetic learners. They appreciate teacher’s support as they go through each one of the activities proposed during the class. Strengths of the group include willingness to learn and ability to work with others

Describing Learners' Communication Skills
In terms of language proficiency, the group can be characterized as a mixed-ability group with the main need to develop the writing skill. It is important to take into account that the school follows a language skill based curriculum and learners take about 50% of their classes through English.

Describing Learners' Cognition Skills

In terms of their cognition skills; they reproduce data, use mind-maps to organize information, and give examples of the concepts studied in class. Nevertheless, they need to work on analyzing texts, summarizing main points, and comparing and contrasting different ideas.

Describing Learners' Affective Needs
In terms of their affective needs they are willing to learn new things, express their opinions, and are able to make improvement plans to solve behavioral and attitudinal problems. The group needs to work on valuing diversity and prioritizing time so that school duties are met.
